After graduating from the Leningrad VOKU, I was sent to serve in Armenia, Leninakan. One of the first students of Kasyanov, who was fluent in Russified karate SENE, served there. He organized a section for officers. The officers' evening leisure could consist of drinking vodka or training. I chose training.

The enthusiasm with which I began training the reconnaissance company quickly faded away. I had to face difficulties of a different order, about which below:
Firstly, the officers, mostly graduates of the Kiev VOKU, looked down on my efforts and with a fair amount of skepticism, because they considered themselves sufficiently prepared in the applied hand-to-hand combat necessary for the intelligence officer, while my methodology was considered folklore and amateur performance.

My parents, after my father's dismissal from the army, remained to live in Ukraine. I made an attempt to transfer to the Ukrainian army. Luckily for me, it was unsuccessful. To be honest, I didn't really want to serve there, I just wanted to leave Armenia against the background of the general departure.

In the Rostov brigade.
Three of us came - me, a conscript German and a soldier Zhuravlev. The brigade had just left Azerbaijan and was housed in tents in an open field not far from Aksai. The officers and soldiers of the brigade fought more with everyday difficulties than they were engaged in combat training.
